The Ferrari 250 GTO is the most recent record holder of the highest price paid for a car on an auction. The car was sold in 2014 at a Bonhams Auction at the Monterey Car Week for 28,5 million euros (38 million dollars).
The Mercedes-Benz W196 Motortyp 196 was sold by Bonhams for 22,6 million euros (29,6 million dollars) at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2013. The car was more valuable for having been driven by by 5-time Formula One world champion Juan Manuel Fangio.
The third most expensive car sold in auction was a fully-restored Ferrari 275 GTB/4 NART Spider, one of only 10 units. Its detailed history includes an appearance with Steve McQueen in the film The Thomas Crown Affair. The car was sold by 20.9 million euros (27.5 million dollars).
The Ferrari 275 GTB4 Competizione Speciale can be considered even rarer than the 250 GTO has only three units were ever built. The Ferrari 275 GTB was designed and built to challenge the Ford GT40 and Shelby Cobra Daytona at Le Mans in 1965. The car was sold by 20.1 million euros (26.4 million dollars).
The Ferrari 375 Plus Spider Competizione was built purely for use by the Ferrari works racing team with a 4.9-litre V12 mounted in the front. It was sold at the Goodwood Festival of Speed of 2014 for 14 million euros (18.4 million dollars).
