During the hustle and bustle of the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend, Aston Martin quietly entered two V12 Zagato concept race cars into a 4 hour race at the Nürburgring to prepare them for the 24 hour race at the Nürburgring on June 25-26, 2011.
The cars finished 2nd and 3rd in their class and experienced no mechanical problems. The cars have been given the nicknames “zig” for the green car and “zag” for the red car.
Aston Martin's Head of Motorsport David King said, “We are very encouraged by the potential that we've started to see today in the V12 Zagato, taking our best yet VLN race result in the process.”
The V12 Zagato race car competes in the SP8 class for road cars with necessary safety and aerodynamic changes. It is meant to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the DB4GT Zagato, which continues the storied-collaboration between Aston Martin and Zagato. Drivers for the two cars include Aston Martin Chief Executive Dr. Ulrich Bez and Aston Martin's Nürburgring Test Centre Director Wolfgang Schuhbauer.
The Zagatos will be joined in the race by a factory-prepped V8 Vantage.
