Silver has been the most popular automotive paint color for the last several years, but automotive paint companies like BASF have to be able to predict what will be popular in the future as well as supplying what is popular now.
BASF is predicting that natural colors are going to become more popular over the next five year. These are colors like brown, dark blue and dark green. It also believes that berry and copper will be popular colors.
"Although popular staple colors such as silver, black and white make up approximately 50 to 80 percent of current production, there is a rich diversity of potential shades that is returning to the market. The increasing inclination of society to celebrate beauty in earth tones and more traditional green and blue hues is the basis for this trend," said Paul Czornij, Technical Manager at BASF.
That means that white, black and silver will make up a smaller portion of cars on the road.
"There are signs from automakers and consumers that the desire for more color on the roads is continuing. We will be tapping into further color spaces, such as bronzes and emeralds. The continued high value assigned to the notion of ecology may now again be signified by the color green," said Mark Gutjahr, Head of Design for BASF in Europe.
In China, BASF says that brown, gold and grey are already the most popular colors.
