hybrid sports car before the end of the year, likely at the Tokyo Motor Show on November 22. The car is a side project related to BMW and Toyota co-developing lithium-air batteries for automotive use, and BMW supplying Toyota with diesel engines.

"Toyota is strong in environment-friendly hybrids and fuel cells. I believe BMW's strength is developing sports cars. I get so excited thinking about the cars that will result from this relationship," said Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda.

According to a report from Motor Trend, the sports car has been in development since last year and could be ready for sale in 2014. CEO Toyoda forced the project through the company to get it started as quickly as possible, and Toyota GT86Dart (modern)Dodge Dart (modern)United States of America, 2012 > present26 versions

chief engineer Tetsuya Tada is working on the project.

"I am hoping for a synergy effect with BMW that will result in a product that none of us could have imagined; something more than anyone expects. I would like that to be something like a sports car. I would even go so far as to say that for the collaboration to work we have to bring a product which exceeds all these expectations," said Tada.

Other than being a hybrid, nothing has been confirmed about the car's powertrain. It is believed to be using a four-cylinder engine, possibly turbocharged, but neither side has said whose engine it will be.

Neither company has said which badge the new car will carry or whether both brands will make a version of the car.
