UPDATE: Images added of the new M5 presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, 13.09.2011
BMW has taken the wraps off the new M5 based on the F10 chassis. The new saloon uses a twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 making 560hp and 502 lb/ft of torque. BMW claims a top speed of 305 km/h and a 0-100km/h time of 4.4 seconds, which is about .3 seconds faster over the previous M5.
The turbocharged engine also means better efficiency. Fuel consumption is improved by 30% to 9.9l/100km in the EU combined cycle.
Power goes to the wheels via a seven-speed, dual clutch transmission and is controlled with an electronically-controlled, limted-slip differential, dubbed the Active-M Differential. The system allows for 100% of the power to be routed to either rear wheel as necessary.
Aesthetically, the new M5 is actually quite subdued, if you can ignore the 19 inch wheels and dinner plate-sized brake rotors. It has the standard M-bits like a front bumper with larger air intakes, side gills and rear diffuser with quad exhaust tips. However, it lacks the power bulge from the current M3, which gives the M5 a bit more of a refined appearance.
BMW has confirmed neither a price nor release date for the new M5.
