. The first was a Five-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Its second award was a 2012 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety {IIHS). It is the only mid-size car this year to receive both awards.

The NHTSA is based on front and side impact tests and rollover test. It received an overall 5-star rating, but it had a four-star rating in the rollover test.

In the IIHS test, it was tested in front and side crash tests, a rollover test and neck injury test. It received 'good' scores in all the tests, and it has stability control which is required of a top safety pick.

It also received a 5-start Euro NCAP score when it was tested last year.

“We are now seeing the results from our commitment to design the highest-rated vehicles in the world in safety performance. Earning these top safety ratings demonstrates the strength of the Malibu’s advanced structure, overall crashworthiness and effectiveness of the vehicle’s state-of-the-art safety technologies," said Gay Kent, GM executive director of Vehicle Safety.

Chevrolet plans to sell the new Malibu in 100 markets. The Malibu Eco is equipped with a mild hybrid system and has a base price of $25,995. Later this summer, Chevrolet will have a 2.5l, four-cylinder version of the car, and a turbo version will come in the fall.
