Nissan and Highcroft racing are shipping the Deltawing to Europe after a successful test at the Sebring International Raceway before and after the 12 Hours of Sebring.
The Deltawing was built in cooperation with Dan Gurney's All American Racers, Don Panoz's Elan Motorsports Technology, Highcroft Racing and Nissan. Nissan supplied the 1.6l turbocharged, four-cylinder engine that was sourced from the Juke but tuned to 300hp. It also has embedded engineers with Highcroft Racing and has been providing technical support. Michelin is supplying the tires for the Deltawing and has also been following the team to develop the Deltawing's special, 4in-wide front tires.
The Deltawing is made up of half the parts of a normal LMP car, but it still contains over 3,000 components.
"This really is a rolling science project for Nissan. The timescales are extremely tight and we are learning every day and will do so all the way to the start of Le Mans 24 hours. At Sebring the basic concept exceeded our expectations, Nissan's role now is to work on the reliability as we take more responsibility for the program as it moves to Europe. The project continues on a very steep learning curve and this is motivating and exciting everyone on the project," said General Manager of Nissan Europe Darren Cox.
The Deltawing will be the 56th entry at this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans as an experimental car competing for no points. Testing now moves to Europe to prepare it for its big competition on June 16-17.
