has confirmed that it will bring its eScooter to market in 2014. It first showed the electrically-driven scooter during the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

“The decision in favor of the eScooter has been made. With this step, we are adding a further important component to our smart mobility concept for urban mobility in the future,” said Dr. Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President Sales and Marketing for Mercedes-BenzMercedes-BenzMercedes-BenzGermany, 1924 > present197 models

Beyond the announcement that it will go on sale, Smart did not go into any detail about how the eScooter will be powered. It will certainly be electric but the motor's power and battery capacity are still unknown. The original concept shown in 2010 used a 4kW (5.4hp) electric motor that sends power directly to the rear wheel. The battery pack in the concept has 80 amp hours of power, which is good for a 100km range. Charging is done via a plug with an outlet located under the Smart emblem at the front of the scooter. For the concept version, Smart said that it would take three to five hours for a full charge. The front and rear 13in wheels are both mounted to a single-sided swing arm.

These specifications are for the concept version that was shown two years ago, and the scooter will not be available for another two years. At the rate electric drivetrains are being developed, it is impossible to say if the eScooter will use these specifications or something better.

Previous concepts for the eScooter used a smartphone app for the speedometer and range indicator. Riders placed their smartphone into a cradle that turns off the  immobiliser and anti-theft protection. Concept versions also were equipped with an air bag, ABS and blind-spot warning system. Similar to the Smart Fortwo, the eScooter is equipped with interchangeable plastic body panels mounted to a steel and aluminum frame. The headlight, tail light and brake light are all LED-powered. Smart says that there is enough storage capacity under the seat for two helmets. When announcing the concept in 2010, Smart said there would also be an optional luggage rack.

The Smart eBike that went of sale this year was among this year's winners of the Red Dot Best-of-the-Best Design Award.
