German, Transmission maker ZF has developed a nine-speed automatic transmission and reports are indicating that Honda are considering using it for future Hondas and Acuras. It would likely begin using the transmission by 2014 at the soonest.
ZF announced the development of the transmission at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was initially designed for front transverse engines and will likely be built in Greenville, South Carolina. ZF claims that the production version increases fuel economy by 16% compared to a six-speed automatic. It is also equipped to accept an electric motor if the manufacturer chooses.
All of these factors would make the nine-speed automatic fit well with Honda which builds many models in the US, predominantly with transverse, front-wheel drive engines.
Honda would likely use the ZF transmission in its larger vehicles like the Acura MDX and RDX SUVs and Honda Odyssey Minivan.
Chrysler has also looked into using the transmission as well in the next generation Jeep Liberty.
