As a kid, nearly every little boy plays with miniature cars, be they Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Corgi or Tomica. Artist Chris Burden has created a kinectic sculpture using over 1,200 Matchbox cars
The sculpture, titiled Metropolis II, is meant to evoke the look of New York City in the 1960s and GM's Futurama exhibition from the 1939 New York World's Fair.
It took Burden four years to construct the sculpture. Despite its beauty, Burden is pessimistic on the fate of the automobile in the future. “The idea that a car runs free, those ideas are about to close,” he said. He compares his sculpture to a model of New York at the turn of the last century that would be full of horses and the car is just about to arrive and change everything.
Metropolis II will be on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for the next decade. So if you are in LA, it might be worth stopping by.
Below I've also posted a snippet of the Futurama exhibit for comparison.
