are spurring sales better than they have been in years. From January to July, Maserati sold 17,000 cars, three times as many as it sold in the same period last year.

Maserati has been on a losing streak in recent years and has set a goal to be profitable again by 2016. Last year, it posted a €700 million loss and sold 6,288 cars. Its 2015 goal is to sell 50,000 cars.

So far the Quattroporte has been the better seller with 7,922 orders through July, but Maserati has not started deliveries of the Ghibli yet. The 2,249 orders for them so far have been pre-orders. Maserati expects the less expensive Ghibli to be the sales leader in the near future.

"The numbers show that the United States is still our largest market globally, but that China has taken the lead for certain models such as the Quattroporte," said Maserati CEO Harald Wester.
