MINI is planning to extend its range further with the introduction of a new 2 seat coupe. The brand is keen to build on their racing heritage with the new Coupe and for that reason the focus will be squarely on driver involvement. This will also represent the first MINI to have the ‘three box’ design more associated with other brands.
The new car will be launched with 3 petrol engines and 1 diesel variant. These will range from a standard Cooper with 122 bhp through to the 211 bhp John Cooper Works model with the 184 bhp Cooper S sitting squarely in the middle. The Coupe will only be offered with the most powerful diesel in Cooper SD form, which boasts an output of 143 bhp, but more importantly 305 nm of torque.
All of the models apart from the John Cooper Works will be available with both the standard manual and an optional 6 speed Automatic. The John Cooper Works will only be available as a manual.
The new chassis will be endowed with relatively familiar mini fayre including DSC stability control, electric power steering and increased torsional rigidity compared to previous MINI’s. The ‘Go Kart’ handling will be emphasized by Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and an optional (standard on John Cooper Works) Electronic Differential (ELDC).
It will be distinctive due to a new ‘helmet roof’ design and integral roof spoiler which extends automatically at 80 km/h (50 mph). It will also sit 29 millimetres lower than the standard hatchback. Despite its Coupe credentials the new car will also boast a through loading facility and a high opening tailgate to increase versatility in day to day driving.
