The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the longest of the year in terms of time. It often bumps right against the FIA's two hour time limit on races, but this year it was a pretty uneventful race. Sebatian Vettel won from the pole, but it was not enough to get him the World Championship because Jensen Button took second at the beginning of the race and never gave it up.
Yet again, Mark Webber had a bad start at the 2011 Singapore Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso got around him at the start and Lewis Hamilton nearly did too.
Within just five laps, Vettel pulled out an over six second lead over Button.
Webber got around Alonso at the end of lap 10 to take third place. Alsonso immediately entered the pits to change tires after Webber's pass.
During lap 11, Timo Glock pulled off the track with a mechanical failure.
During lap 12, Hamilton was attempting to pass Felipe Massa. He cut a corner a little too close destroying the left side of his front wing and puncturing Massa's tire. Not only did he have to come in to repair his wing and get new tires, at lap 16 Hamilton had to serve a drive-thru penalty for the incident.
Michael Schumacher had a wild ride during lap 29. His teammate, Nico Rosberg, had just nearly crashed passing Sergio Perez. Schumacher was now right behind Perez and went to pass. Schumacher crashed into the back of him launching himself into the air and colliding with the barrier. Schumacher was uninjured and immediately got out of the car. Perez was able to rejoin the race.
The accident brought out the safety car though that decimated Vettel's massive lead over Button.
When the safety car pulled away, Button was stuck behind three back markers. Within just a lap Vettel had already pulled out a 8.9 second lead.
Webber pulled out a very narrow pass on Alonso right after the safety car pulled away.
On lap 52, Jarno Trulli's Lotus' engine stopped working, and he pulled off the course bringing out a yellow flag.
There was some excitement at the end of the race that Button might be able to catch up to Vettel, but he was never able to get close enough.
Overall, the race was a show of Vettel's skill under the lights of Singapore.
