Nissan has been chosen to supply New York City with its next-generation taxi fleet after a two year selection process. The NV2000 was selected by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission to become the city’s “Taxi of Tomorrow” at a City Hall press conference that was attended by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Nissan Americas Chairman Carlos Tavares.
Carlos Tavares said of the achievement: “Nissan is proud to provide the next generation of taxis for the City of New York. The NV200 taxi will give Nissan the opportunity to showcase our dedication to vehicle quality and urban mobility to more than 600,000 passengers every day.”
The NV200 taxi is to be based on a modified version of the commercial vehicle which is currently available in various global markets. It will improve on the current generation of New York taxis by featuring a more efficient 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine, improved passenger and luggage room, less ‘annoying’ horn, easy-to-clean fabric, independently controlled rear air conditioning and satellite navigation as standard. No doubt NYC cab regulars will be appreciative of these changes.
Other convenience features will include sliding doors, a transparent roof panel, overhead reading lights, floor lights, a 12V electrical outlet and two USB plugs for mobile charging.
Passenger safety was also a focus for Nissan with the NV200 taxi to include front and rear-seat occupant curtain airbags, seat-mounted airbags for the front row and traction control and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) as standard.
Nissan suggests the retail price of the NV200 taxi to be around $29,000.
Mayor Bloomberg said of the initiative: “The city’s Taxi of Tomorrow is the Nissan NV200 – and it’s going to be the safest, most comfortable and most convenient cab the city has ever had. We started this process to leverage our taxi industry’s purchasing power to get the highest quality taxi, one that that can expand and redefine the legendary image of New York City taxicabs. The new taxis will be custom-designed to meet the specific demands of carrying 600,000 passengers a day in New York City traffic and the vehicle meets the top priorities identified by the public in our on-line survey.”
The NV200 taxis will begin their introduction into fleets in 2013.
