One in Seven American Teens Say They Have Fallen Asleep While Driving

Driving tired is as bad as driving drunk.

A study recently published by American Automobile Association found that 14% of drivers between 16-24 admitted to falling asleep while driving at least once in the past year. In comparison, 10% of drivers of all ages said that they had fallen asleep while driving. Thirty percent of drivers admitted to having been so tired that they struggled to keep their eyes open in the last month.

"Research shows that fatigue impairs safe driving, with many symptoms causing drivers to behave in ways similar to those who are intoxicated," said AAA President & CEO Robert Darbelnet.

Sleepy drivers were shown to be responsible for 17% of traffic crashes in the US in a 2010 NHTSA study.

AAA wants drivers to get at least seven hours of sleep before a long trip and take a break every two hours when driving.

I'm not gonna lie I've done it before. I'ts a pretty scary thing to fall asleep, it was only for 1 or 2 seconds for me but after I snapped awake i was scared out of my mind.
