The International Energy Agency is predicting that by 2035 the number of passenger cars in the world will double, which raises some major concerns about the environment and the remaining oil supply.
One effect of the increased number of cars will be the effect on oil demand. Usage is planned to go from 87 million barrels per day in 2010 to 99 million barrels in 2035. High efficiency vehicles like electric cars and hybrids cost more so it is hard for them to gain traction in emerging markets. It predicts that cars will make up 75% of the demand for oil by 2035, which is actually down from the 77% that cars used in 2010.
The International Energy Agency predicts that there will have to be policy changes to prevent high carbon emissions in the future. By 2035, it predicts that China will be using 70% more power than in the United States. The IEA is looking into policies that would limit climate change to two degrees Celsius in the long term.
