Speedster to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 550.
The model would be made in incredibly limited quantities and take inspiration from the design of the 550 and come with a thin, manual top and carbon fiber body parts. The 911 Speedster would also have door handles hidden in the top corner of the door.
Porsche may keep production limited to 550 units, and sales are expected to begin in 2015.
The original 550 was made from 1953 to 1956 and was designed as a customer racecar that could be driven on the road. They used a 1.5-liter four-cylinder producing between 108hp and 132hp but weighed just 550kg (1,213lb) with an aluminum body and space frame chassis. Depending on model, it came with either a four-speed or five-speed manual transmission.
The car is also famous for being the vehicle that James Dean was driving when he had his fatal accident in 1955 while driving to a race in Southern California.
