US Average Fuel Economy Rises in August

The monthly report released by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute shows that the average fuel economy of vehicles sold in the US rose again in August. Average fuel economy is up to 23.8mpg (9.9l/100km) for new cars in the US. It was the fourth highest month for fuel economy that it has ever recorded. 

The August data represent a 0.2mpg increase over July. The increase is attributed to the rising cost of gasoline in the US. 

The institute began tracking average new car fuel economy in October 2007. There has been a 3.7mpg increase (18%) in fuel economy for cars in the US since then. 

The average price of gas increased from $3.73 per gallon on August 1 to $3.83 on August 31. As of September 3, the last reported data, the average cost of gasoline in the US was $3.84 per gallon. 

US car sales were up 27% in August.
