Today Vettel was yet again the quickest driver on the qualifying, adding an eighth pole position to his season count. At Spa-Francorchamps the wet and dry weather conditions caused a very unpredictable session.
With the time of 1m48.298s, the German finished ahead of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton, while Aussie Mark Webber finished in third. Felipe Massa was the quickest of the Ferrari’s with fourth quickest time.
After having got himself involved in a strange incident with Pastor Maldonado, Lewis Hamilton was lucky to have been able to compete in Q3. As the track got drier towards the end of Q2 Hamilton didn’t manage to avoid contact with Maldonado’s as they were going through Bus Stop chicane. Hamilton still managed to make the fastest time but then Maldonado seemed to come back for revenge and sideswiped the McLaren car forcing the team mechanics to perform minor repairs before the start of the next round.
With rain running most of the show, Jenson Button saw himself down the order failing to grant his access to Q3, finishing down in 13th place.
For the second time this season Felipe Massa beat his team-mate Fernando Alonso in qualifying. The Brazilian was fourth while the Spaniard only managed to perform the eighth quickest lap of the day.
Nico Rosberg finished fifth ahead of a brilliant Toro Rosso performance by Jaime Alguersuari. Still, the star of the day was Bruno Senna, who made a brilliant comeback to F1, finishing 7th on the first qualifying with Renault, three places ahead of his team-mate Vitaly Petrov.
Michael Scumacher who is this weekend celebrating the 20th anniversary of his debut in Formula One had a disastrous session, seeing his joy and expectations for the race go down the flush. The German crashed on his out-lap on the approach to the Rivage finishing qualifying in last.
Sebastien Buemi was regularly on the top-ten during qualifying but missed out on Q3, finishing 11th ahead of Kamui Kobayashi for Sauber. Neither of the Williams managed to pass the Q2 with Barrichello taking 14th place and Maldonado 16th. Adrian Sutil was 15th after crashing his Force India on the way out of Eau Rouge and forcing a red flag, for debris cleaning.
