Group is among the 100 companies included in the United Nations’ new Global Compact 100 stock index for large companies with economic and social responsibility.
"The inclusion of Volkswagen is further recognition of our consistent orientation towards economic, environmental and social sustainability,” said Hans Dieter Pötsch, head of finance at VW Group.
To be included on the index, companies had to demonstrate environmental friendliness, social responsibility and profitability. The 100 companies on the index had the best financial performance of these types of companies worldwide.
United Nations is hoping that positive performance from this index will show that a company can still be sustainable and profitable.
“Volkswagen is making good progress on the way to becoming the world's most sustainable automaker," said Pötsch.
Volkswagen Group is also listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in the United States.
