is updating its electric cars with a more powerful electric motor and faster charging system. The latest motor supplied by Siemens will get the electric C30Volvo C30 Electric ConceptSweden, 2009 > present4 photos
to 70km/h (44mph) in 5.9 seconds, and it can charge fully in 1.5 hours.
The new Siemens motor produces 89kW (194.hp) and 250Nm (184.4lb-ft), compared to 82kW (110hp) from the previous electric motor used. The new motor is also slightly more efficient; the certified range has increased by 1km over the previous version to 164km.
The new three-phase fast charger can fully charge the car in 1.5 hours if a three-phase outlet is used. If a 230v outlet is used, it will take 8-10 hours to charge.
"Adding the innovative fast charging solution will radically improve the time and mileage for the daily usage of the car," said Lennart Stegland, head of propulsion systems at Volvo.
The upgrades will be applied to the entire 100-car electric Volvo C30 fleet in Europe this summer. The vehicles are available only by lease.
Volvo says that it is already planning to incorporate these upgrades into hybrids and EVs on its new SPA platform that will go on sale next year.
"Our aim is to be first with the latest technology within electrification. The new C30 Electric fleet will give us continuous feedback on technology and functionality as we approach a future series production," said Stegland.
