Volvo hopes to end fatal accidents from its vehicles by 2020

will be testing safety systems at a new separate business called Active Safety Test Area, or ASTA for short. The business will be located next door to Volvo's test center in Hällered, Sweden, and is owned by the Technical Research Institute of Sweden and the Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. It will become operational in 2014.

"With the new facility we will have access to an excellent tool for the development of tomorrow's intelligent safety and driver support systems," said Peter Mertens, Vice President for Research & Development at Volvo.

ASTA will be able to test cars on simulated busy city roads, highways, multi-lane motorways and crossroads.ASTA will be responsible for developing active safety systems that avoid accidents or reduce their consequences.

Volvo has already developed active safety systems like pedestrian detection, Driver Alert Control, Cross Traffic Alert and Road Sign Information.

The company has the goal of ending fatal accidents in Volvo's by 2020.
