XJ-13 (United Kingdom, 1964)

Jaguar's desire to build a DOHC V12 engine meant for racing goes back to the early 50's, rather than following the traditional strategy of developing the road version first and then modify it for racing.

It was not until 1965 that construction of the first car began. The body was designed by Malcolm Sayer and it was equipped with a 5.0 liter V12 mid-engine and a 5-speed manual transmission.

Even though the XJ13 was very important for Jaguar engineers and designers who worked on it, the same could not be said for the management team that kept on delaying the project. When Ford launched the 7.0 GT40, the XJ13 was considered outdated right when it was finalized. The prototype was then tested in the Motor Industry Research Association and at Silverstone, and it was considered that if they wanted to race with the car it would need extensive work and improvements. For this reason the car was set aside and no other copy was produced.
