Locomobile

Locomobile was a racing and passanger car built by The Locomobile Company of America founded in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1899. The Company name derived from locomotive and automobile. John Brisben Walker and Amzi L. Barber entered a partnership subsequent to the purchase by the former of the plans for a car production belonging to brothers Freelan and Francis Stanley. The partnership had a short life: two weeks. Walker then founded Mobile Company of America and Amzi L. Barber moved Locomobile to Bridgeport, Connecticut, appointing the brothers Stanley general managers. The first Locomobiles were steam-powered and very unrealiable but nevertheless quite successful. In 1904 internal combustion,  more expensive  Locomobile was produced, and the brand quickly became the most luxurious, elegant and prestigious in the USA. In 1922 the company was sold to Durant Motors that continued to sell the cars under the Locomobile brand until 1929. A Locomobile finish 3rd in the 1905 Vanderbilt Cup and won the Vanderbilt Cup in 1908.
