The Fiat 131, also known as Miafiori, was introduced in October 1974.
The mid-size car was available with two engines at launch, a 1300 cc and a 1600 cc unit, and was sold as 2- and 4-door sedan as well as 5-door estate "Panorama". Customers could opt for the standard 4-speed manual transmission or an optional 5-speed manual, the 1600 cc engine could also be matched with a 3-speed automatic gearbox. The trims available at launch were the Standard and Special, the Special being distinguished by four round head lamps.
In 1978, the 131 was updated and the new Mirafiori and Supermirafiori versions were presented at the Geneva Motor Show. The differences between the Mirafiori and Supermirafiori are that the latter were only available as 4-door sedans and were equipped with 1300 or 1600 dohc engines.
The Mirafioris continued as 2- and 4-door sedans as well as 5-door Panorama variants and were sold with L and CL trim. Changes compared with the previous generation were the rectangular headlights and better interior. In terms of mechanics, the 1300 cc engine was increased to 1301 cc.
In 1981, the production of these models ceased. A total of 1.5 million units had been produced.

The 131 Abarth was introduced at the 1976 Geneva Motor Show. It replaced the Fiat 124 Rally for the Fiat Team. It was based on the experimental 131 Abarth 031, which had won the Tour of Italy in the previous year. It was derived from the 2-door body variant but had been adapted for rallying to reach a top speed of 190 km/h with a maximum output of 215 hp at 7000 rpm.
131 Racing / Sport (1978-1981)
The 131 Racing (marketed as 131 Sport in Germany and Austria) was launched in 1978 and was powered by a 2-litre 4-cyclinder twincam engine, the same used in the 132 model. This power unit delivered 115 hp and accelerated the car to a top speed of 180 km/h.
The bodywork was derived from the 2-door Mirafiori. However, changes were made, such as two halogen headlights were added in front, wheelarch strips and a spoiler and two external rearview mirrors. The interior was also updated with a sporty look.
