Adrian Newey has to be considered one of the greatest racecar engineers ever. His designs have won championships in IMSA, CART and nine World Constructors' Championships in Formula 1. Just as being a good farmer does not necessarily make someone a good cook, being able to create a fast racecar does not make someone a great driver. Blancpain Super Trofeo race at Silverstone as the invited VIP driver and crashed into the wall while trying to heat up his tires.
As you can see in the video below, Newey was weaving back and forth on the warm-up lap to heat his tires. But he loses grip in the rear, and the car spins. The front of the car hits the wall at roughly 90 degrees in a fairly low speed crash. He is even able to continue driving the car, but there was no way he could possibly compete in the race like that.
Newey was checked by medical officials but was uninjured.
In the first race on Saturday, Newey and teammate Alberto Sabbatini, editor of Autosprint magazine, finished in eighth place.
