Volkswagen’s DSG is celebrating its’ success with the production of the automatic gearbox reaching the 3.5 million units milestone. The automatic gearbox is produced at the Kassel Plant and is fitted to Audi, Seat, Skoda, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and Volkswagen cars.
Developed by Volkswagen the DSG dual clutch transmission offers a combination between the convenience of an automatic transmission and the efficiency and dynamic performance of a manual gearbox. Thanks to the two clutches the DSG makes shifting faster.
Besides handing top levels of shifting, the DSG transmission also offers fuel economy and sports appeal. Launched in 2003 as the world’s first production dual clutch transmission, the Volkswagen 6-speed DSG was initially used in the Golf R32 and the Audi TT.
Currently the DSG continues to offer convenience, fuel economy and driving fun but through all Volkswagen’s model portfolio. Since 2008, the 7-speed DSG has also been available for smaller displacement engines with up to 125 kW in power and 250 Nm in torque.
For 2009 Volkswagen prepared a new addition to the already successful DSG: the DQ500. In this case the automatic transmission became accessible to customers of larger vehicles and engines (up to 500 Nm engine torque), e.g. the Audi TTRS.
