Honda Recreates Senna's 1989 Suzuka Qualifying Lap in Light and Sound

It used the original telemetry information for the lap

No one has done anything like this before

Crank up the speakers for this video because it is a great one.

As celebration of its return to Formula 1 with McLaren, Honda has recreated Ayrton Senna's qualifying lap for the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. But Honda did not do it with a car. Instead, it took the original telemetery information and set up a circuit of lights and speakers around the track.

The speakers recreated the sound of the car, and the lights showed where the car was on its lap.

The 1989 Japanese Grand Prix is important for several reasons. First, at the time, Senna's lap time of 1:38.041 was a record at the time, and beat his teammate Alain Prost by 1.73 seconds.

During the race, Prost pulled ahead with Senna behind for 46 of the 53 laps. At the chicane just before the start/finish line, Senna locked wheels with Prost, and both men stalled. Senna got a push start back onto the track and finished first. However, immediately after the race, he was disqualified. Prost had enough of a points lead that Senna's disqualification made him the 1989 Drivers' World Champion.

Unique is a word that is overused, but this is a truly unique video. You have never seen something like this before.

Hopefully, Honda will release the full lap with just the car's audio soon.
