Mercedes revealed the first images of the
GLS, a model that completes the renaming of the SUV range of the German brand and which is an updated version of the
GL-Class. The GLS receives a number of subtle improvements to the exterior design level, a more luxurious interior with new connectivity options as well as more efficient engines, a new nine-speed automatic transmission and improvements in air suspension. With the new designation GLS, Mercedes wants to bring the model upmarket, associating it with the
S-Class.
In terms of design the highlight is the new grille included a large three-pointed star, complemented by two blades that give a bolder look to the GL successor. The SUV also receives new front bumpers, new front headlights design, a slightly modified rear lights and also a modified rear bumper and new wheels.
Inside the GLS also receives some improvements compared to the GL, which includes a new panel with an elevated infotainment display combined with a touchpad control placed between the front seats. The design of the instruments has also been changed and a new three-spoke multifunction steering wheel has also been added. The GLS comes with seven seats as standard.
The upmarket strategy for the GLS, thanks to the increase of luxury, has as main objective to approach it from rivals such as the
Range Rover and recently released
Bentley Bentayga .
The GLS receives an updated engine range, which also includes some engines that come straight from the GL. Updates were made to improve fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions. This was also possible thanks to the introduction of the new nine-speed automatic transmission.
A hybrid plug-in version is also under consideration, but has not yet been confirmed for production.
