New Opel Astra receives “red dot” design award

The new Astra has been chosen by an international expert jury to receive the “red dot” award in the product design category. Since its’ sales debut in December 2009 this new generation has already received 16 awards.

This award joins a gallery that already counts with the the Goldenes Lenkrad (Golden Steering Wheel), by Germany’s AutoBild and its European affiliates. The Astra also received three awards in Spain and a viewer’s choice prize in Romania.

In Spain the new compact model was nominated Car of the Year by ABC newspaper, won the Readers Choice 2010 from Prensa Ibérica, La Vanguardia and AutoFácil, and the Car of the Year 2010 award in the Canary Islands.

“It is a very special honor to receive this endorsement from an international jury of non-automotive designers. It confirms once again that Opel is on the right track by offering the highest quality components and materials matching the upscale execution,” says Mark Adams, vice president of Opel/Vauxhall Design.

Presented since 1955 by the Design Zentrum North Rhine Westphalia in Essen, Germany, the international red dot design award is considered one of the largest and most important design prizes in the world.

The new Opel Astra now joins the list of the German brand models that received the “red dot” award, which includes the Insignia, the Flextreme Concept,  the GT, the Astra GTC and 1998’s Astra G.
