In the US classic Porsche 911s have significantly increased in value over the past decade. Now, Porsche is raffling off a 1973 911T at the Porsche Parade in Savannah, Georgia restored by Porsche's in-house restoration service – Porsche Classic. The car was found in the US and shipped to Porsche Classic in Stuttgart. Members of the Porsche Club of America were able to follow the car's restoration online and received updates through the club's newsletter.
The idea of raffling a classic, restored Porsche started at the Rennsport Reunion in 2007, one of the largest meetings of classic Porsches in the US. Usually Porsche raffles off a new car at these events. The car was found in Los Angeles and shown off at the Porsche Parade 2010 in St. Charles, Illinois. From there it was shipped to Stuttgart for its restoration.
The car arrived to Porsche Classic with no headlights, no interior, no windows, a poorly modified body, a non-running engine and the remnants of bird nests in the car. The restoration took less than a year. It was carried out with not just original parts but also original tools. Porsche Classic works on about 250 cars per year and works exclusively on Porsche's air-cooled models.
The 911T was the base model 911 in 1973. It has a 2.4 liter flat-six cylinder engine with fuel injection that makes 140hp and has a top speed of 127mph. According to Hemmings Motor News the average 1973 is worth $28,353.81 but pristine examples could be worth up to $62,990.
The Porsche Parade 2011 takes place between July 31 and August 7 in Savannah, Georgia.
