Renault Twingo-Successor Will Be Likely Rear-Engined with Rear-Wheel Drive

The current government-mandated push towards lower CO2 emissions is forcing Renault to look more than 50 years into its past for the successor to the Twingo. Rumors are saying that the Twingo-successor that will come in 2014 will be rear-engined with rear-wheel drive. Renault wants this car to occupy the same role the Renault 5 had.

The platform for the car will come from Renault's cooperation with Daimler, and it will use the same platform as the next Smart Fortwo. That platform is based on a rear engine, rear-wheel drive layout like the Fortwo already uses. Renault's marketing boss Stephen Norman said that the next Twingo will use “totally unexpected mechanical innovation."

“This is not going to be a retro car like the Fiat 500 or BMW Mini. The Renault 5 issue is a philosophical checkpoint [in that] the positioning will be similar to the 5 when we launched that in 1972: slightly hedonistic, with some form of snob appeal. We won’t pitch this new car against the Citroën C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo,” said Norman.

In the 50s and 60s, Renault sold the Dauphine and R8 both of which were rear-wheel drive with rear engines. These cars and the Renault 5 are in the gallery.
