Toyota Has Revealed the 11th Generation Corolla with More Size and Power

has revealed the 11th generation Corolla, which with over 40 million units sold in the past 47 years has become the best-selling automotive nameplate ever.

The new Corolla gets major upgrades inside and outside with a new platform and all new styling. Physically, the wheelbase is 3.93in (100mm) longer and it is 3.9in (99mm) longer than previously with a shorter rear overhang. Width increases by 0.63in (16mm), and the height falls by 0.39in (10mm).

The new platform uses more high strength steel to reduce weight of all trims below 2,900lb.

The new styling is much sharper and more angular, especially in the front. It has trapezoidal grill with a thin intake below the hood. One major change is that LED headlights will be a standard feature. At the rear, the C-pillar is blended into the trunk at a steeper angle to give the car a more coupe-like look.

Inside, Toyota has added upscale features like piano black trim, and there will be three interior color options – blue, black or amber pinstripes.

The added length outside translates to more legroom in the front and rear. The seats also get thicker padding for more comfort. To keep interior noise low, Toyota fitted acoustic glass, thicker carpet and a seal between the dashboard and windshield.

The instrument panel is lit in blue with chrome-trimmed rings. A 3.5in black and white TFT is added below the speedometer.

Power for the new car comes from a choice of two engines in the US. The standard engine is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 132hp and 128lb-ft of torque. The other option is the same engine equipped with Toyota’s Valvematic system that offers variable lift and phasing for the intake valve that boosts power to 140hp and 126lb-ft of torque. The Valvematic engine will only be available on the LE Eco trim.

There is also a CVT transmission available on the Corolla for the first time that will be available on the LE, S and LE Eco trims. The base L trim still gets the old four-speed automatic or six-speed manual. The CVT offers ECO and SPORT driving modes to increase or decrease throttle response. ECO mode also reduces air conditioning operation. The Sport mode is only available on the S trim and allows the driver between seven pre-selected gear ratios.

In the US, the Corolla will be offered in four trim levels - L, LE, S, and the new LE Eco. All of them come with LED low beam lights and LED daytime running lights.  The LE Eco adds underbody panels, a rear spoiler and low rolling resistance tires to deliver fuel economy. Toyota says that it will reveal more when the Corolla goes on sale in the fall.

The new Corolla will be built in 16 factories and sold in 154 countries and roll out over the next 12 months globally.
