Cars sales fell 1.0% in August to 466,300 cars, but from January to August sales are up 3.1% to 3.84 million cars.

“The Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand is not immune to the effects of the ongoing very challenging situation on world markets. However, the tailwind from China, our largest single market, continues”, said Christian Klingler, head Volkswagen Group sales and marketing.

Volkswagen Cars sold 1.7 million cars in Asia from January to August, 16.7% growth over the same period last year. Of those, 1.56 million were sold in China, up 18.4%. It also sold 41,400 cars in India, down 11%.

Volkswagen is now reliant on sales in China to survive. If sales had not grown so quickly, it would not offset the falling sales in other markets.

From January to August, Volkswagen sold 1.08 million cars in Europe, down 6.7%. Sales were down 6.8% in Western Europe and down 1% in Central and Eastern Europe.

In South America, Volkswagen sold 484,300 cars from January to August, down 14.6%. In Brazil, sales were down 17.5% in that period to 363,900 cars.

Volkswagen sold 417,200 cars in North America form January to August, a 3.3% gain. Sales in the United States were down 1.3% in that time period to 282,900 cars.
