Volvo entered the SUV segment late but the XC90 proved to be a commercial success due to the versatility that it offered. This was shown by the peak of 86,000 cars exported in 2005.
The XC90 project was headed by Hans Wikman and his team. Meanwhile, Doug Frasher and his team have come up with the styling for the new car, which is similar to the concept Volvo unveiled in Detroit.
Frasher and his team used a broad reference group to finalise the styling of the XC90. Frasher says "I remember one of the ladies making a sweeping gesture that almost sketched the sleek shape of the bonnet flowing up on the A-pillar. We put a lot of effort into creating a design that felt strong and protective without the impression of sheer size. The XC90 is muscular, but not aggressive."
Volvo will help to build upon the success of the previous model which focused on safety. Volvo demonstrated Roll Stability Control, seatbelt pre-tensioners on all of the seats and inflatable side curtain airbags for all of the seats. Since the XC90’s inception it has won 110 awards and won the hearts of many families.
