Webber takes pole in Silverstone as McLaren struggles

Although Red Bull was expected to be disadvantaged by the exhaust rules controversy, Webber was able to take the pole position for tomorrow's British Grand Prix. In Silverstone the team was once again dominant in qualifying, with the Aussie being sided by his team-mate Sebastian Vettel on the front lane.

The winner of last years British Grand Prix took the pole with the time of 1m30.399s, only 0.032 seconds faster than Vettel. The time was made on the first attempt on Q3 with light shower securin g that Webber wouldn't be challenged until the end of the session.

Ferrari has once again emerged as the biggest threat to the RB7's, while  home team McLaren struggled once again. In tomorrow's race Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa will share the second row at the start. While Alonso was only 0.2 seconds behind Webber's pace, Jenson Button, in fifth, was 1.5 seconds off the pace, with Hamilton finishing in 10th.

Thanks to heavy rain at the end of Q1, the track was left drying steadily and getting faster and faster through Q2, which caused some surprises in the starting order for tomorrow.

In the top ten, rookie Paul di Resta was the surprise of the session claiming 6th position in his first Silverstone appearence. Pastor Maldonado also made it to Q3 and finished in seventh ahead of Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi.

With these results Michael Schumacher saw himself go down the order to 13th, four places behind his team-mate Nico Rosberg. The two Renaults had a disappointing result in today's qualifying with Vitaly Petrov finishing in 14th and Nico Rosberg in 16th.

The team who suffered the most with the rain in Q1 was Toro Rosso which saw his two drivers failing to make the cut into Q2, finishing in 18th and 19th. Thanks to this result Team Lotus managed to put Heikki Kovalainen into Q2, finishing in 17th.

Rubens Barrichello will start tommorrow's race in 15th place as he splits the two Renaults. Adrian Sutil and Sergio Perez were the first two drivers to miss a spot in Q3 as they will split the sixth lane at tomorrow's start.

Debuting in qualifying Daniel Ricciardo will start 24th for his first grand prix, having been 0.6s slower than Hispania team-mate Tonio Liuzzi.
