teetering on the edge of death, it will be interesting if another American electric car company can survive.

Don Graunstadt and Albert Lam who both previously worked for Lotus Engineering founded Detroit Electric after Lam bought the rights to the Detroit Electric name in 2008. The company has grand goals. It wants to start production in August and build 2,500 cars annually in 2014. It claims to have a partnership with a major automaker but will not announce it until it debuts its car.

“We are committed to doing our part for this great revival of Detroit through innovation, entrepreneurship and determination – what we like to call ‘Detroit 2.0’.  Our investors and management team are thankful to the State of Michigan for the help provided in allowing Detroit Electric to carry on the legacy that began in Michigan so many years ago," said Graunstadt.

The company's first car will be a two-seat sports car that will launch in April in Detroit to the media and get a public debut at the Shanghai Motor Show on April 20. The company has given no other specific details about its car.

“I am very fortunate to be working with a group of very talented engineers to create something really special.  The sports car will allow us to demonstrate to the world our ability to build an exciting and innovative product," said Lam.
