to the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, to display that hydrogen fuel cells are feasible in the real world. The car will remain in Brussels for the rest of the year to be available for test drives by members of the European Parliament, European Commission members and other policy makers.

“We are delighted that the FCH JU [Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking] has chosen the ix35 Fuel Cell as its European demonstration vehicle and look forward to working with them to promote the benefits of hydrogen and fuel cell technology.  We are sure that the leading policymakers and opinion-formers who drive this remarkable vehicle will find its ability to deliver performance and comfort without compromising its eco-friendly nature with tailpipe emissions highly compelling,” said Hyundai Motor Europe President Byung Kwon Rhim.

The ix35 Fuel Cell is built in South Korea on the same assembly line as the regular ix35. It plans to build 1,000 of them through 2015 to lease to vehicle fleets. The first shipment will be 17 vehicles to fleets in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Skåne, Sweden.

Its electric motor produces 134hp and can accelerate to 100km/h in 12.5 seconds with a top speed of 160km/h. Its fuel cell provides 594km of range on a tank of fuel.
