will loan 70 electric vehicles, including some of its i-Road concepts to the city of Grenoble, France, for a three-year test.
The project aims to test a self-service car sharing network for one-way, in-city trips. The cars will be tracked and service users will know were they can pickup available cars. French energy company EDF Group will install a network of charging points.
The city of Grenoble believes that an electric car network for the city would meet its CO2 and air pollution reduction goals. It is meant to compliment existing public transport system by allowing drivers to make short journeys in the city that would be too difficult to do on foot and inconvenient to use public transport. The project also aims to reduce the number of cars on the road.
Toyota gets the experience of operating a car sharing service and understanding the different needs that these vehicles may have in comparison to personal vehicles. It also gets to conduct a real world study of electric car use in urban centers.
Toyota says that it will supply its COMS single-seat electric car and a few of its i-Road concepts as well.
