Zero-emission electric smart fortwo on the way

Details of the third-generation 2012 smart fortwo have been revealed and for the first time the popular city-car will receive a fully-electric drivetrain.

Despite losing the power of petrol, the new electric fortwo will actually be quicker than the previous generation with 0-60 km/h now taking 5 seconds instead of 6.5 (0-100 km/h just under 13 seconds), and top speed increasing from 100 km/h to 120 km/h. This is thanks to the 55 kW electric motor supplied by Deutsche Accumotive which is powered by a 17.6 kWh battery and produces 130 Nm of torque. This will reportedly enable a travel range of around 140 km.

Head of smart, Dr. Annette Winkler, said:

"The smart fortwo has exceeded itself. It has always been a pioneer of urban mobility and with the new electric drive it is once again setting standards with even more driving fun and environmental compatibility. With the new generation the frequently cited "electric era" has finally arrived."

Charging for the new fortwo will take around eight hours for an empty battery, but with the optional quick-charge function equipped, a 22 kW on-board charger can take care of it in less than an hour.

Stylistic changes to the 2012 fortwo include a bigger radiator grille, daytime LED lights and broader door sills, while a new colour, fresh green, is available as a ‘visible manifestation of electric driving fun’. Interior upgrades are to be fully automatic air conditioning with pollen filter and pre-air conditioning, the ability to start the pre air-condition through the internet or a smartphone, electric windows and door mirrors, a leather steering wheel and gear knob and power steering. 9-spoke allows are also standard on a choice of either solid glass roof or cabrio body styles.

One other nifty feature developed for the new fortwo is its own iPhone app which will combine a trip computer, hands-free calling, music, navigation and a car finder function.

A ‘five-figure’ number of the third-gen fortwo will roll off the production line with sales to commence in 30 international markets in the spring of 2012. The vehicle will be officially unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show next month.
