at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and it has been touting the refreshed models active matrix LEDs that allow portions of the lights to turn off while driving so that the high beams can be directed around oncoming cars to prevent drivers from being blinded. The A8 will also get active matrix LED turn signals that light up sequentially when activated to grab other drivers' attention at the car's desire to turn.

The turn signal lights are also brighter so that it is more obvious during inclement weather.

Each light has 18 LEDs under the headlights that are divided into seven blocks. There are 24 LEDs in the rear turn signal divided into eight bocks. When activated the lights turn on in 20 millisecond intervals sequentially to show that the car is going to turn. The lights also increase in intensity as they turn on.

The active matrix LED headlights are made from 25 LEDs each. If the on-board camera sees another car coming it turns off the correct sections of the lights to direct the light around them. The lights remain at full brightness elsewhere. The lights also work with the navigation system, night vision and turn signals to direct light where needed. It turns the lights into corners and directs the lights at pedestrians on the side of the road if they are detected.
