has announced a $332 million investment into Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to build new, cutting-edge engines and transmissions. GM is making a major push to create cleaner, more efficient internal combustion engines that do not need an added electric engine to hit fuel economy targets in the US.

“We are investing in technologies and manufacturing capabilities that produce high-quality, fuel-efficient vehicles and components for our customers. Today’s announcement demonstrates GM’s commitment to growing the business and strengthening the plant communities where we receive so much support," said GM Vice President for North American Manufacturing Diana Tremblay.

GM has revealed specifically what the money will go towards. It will deveop a new family of three- and four-cylinder engines that will displace between 1.0- and 1.5-liters. GM believes that this new engine family could be in two million of its cars a year by 2020.

It will also upgrade its current V6 engine family for better efficiency and is investing in early development of a new V6 engine family.

GM is also creating an eight-speed automatic transmission that will be on the road by the end of 2016, and it will upgrade its current six-speed transmission in the mean time.
