Chairman Martin Winterkorn appears to believe that if he is taking a cut in his bonus, then all Volkswagen workers need one. Just a week after announcing that he would take a 20% voluntary reduction in his bonus, Volkswagen announced that it would reduce the performance bonus that it pays to German factory workers by 4% over the previous year. This comes despite Volkswagen Group having a record sales year in 2012.
German workers will receive a €7,200 bonus, a 4% reduction from the €7,500 bonus that they received in 2012 for 2011 sales.
Volkswagen gave two reasons for the reduction. First, given the formula in the bargaining agreement between the labor union and Volkswagen, the workers would have received less money, but Volkswagen supplemented it with less money.
Head of Human Resources at Volkswagen Dr. Horst Neumann also explained: "The situation is becoming more difficult. In southern Europe, the consequences of the financial crisis have not yet been overcome and competition is becoming increasingly tough.”
