CEO Sergio Marchionne said that European automakers need to work together to fix the problems facing the region. He also said that the deep discounts that are being employed by some automakers are hurting the industry more than they are helping. Volkswagen is firing back today saying that Marchionne should step down as president of the ACEA - the European Automobile Manufacturers Association.

Volkswagen Chief Communications Officer Stephan Grühsem says that Marchionne is an unacceptable president and he should step down. If he does not, Grühsem said VW might leave the ACEA.

The ACEA was founded in 1991 and is made up of 18 European automakers. The president of the organization serves a one-year term. Marchionne was president in 2006, 2007 and 2012. Dr. Dieter Zetsche from Daimler was president in 2010 and 2011.

The problem the European car industry is that nearly every company is struggling except for Volkswagen, which is somehow continuing to grow sales.
