The big screen is the most magical medium of communication. Inside the movie theater there are no problems, no war or financial crisis. Those two hours are pure entertainment produced to make you dream and live situations that you never get to experience otherwise.

And cars are a big part of movies, at least for us petrol heads. In movies there are no limits to what a car can do. Where else would have a talking car? Or a car that drives you into the future? Only in movies. You may dream with the chance of being part of a risky car chase but then again none of us want to commit a crime, so let's stick with movies.

Car chases, street races, four-wheeled friends... Some cars that had their 15 minutes of fame have become true legends and icons, inspiring replicas, transformations and revivals.

Choosing the greatest cars from the big screen is no easy task and of course a lot are missing but we summed up some of the most legendary ones. So we welcome you to comment and complete the list!

Dodge Charger R/T - The Fast and the Furious

The Fast and the Furious franchise is all about great fast cars and one of its main stars is an all american classic muscle car, the Dodge Charger. In the movie the 1970 Charger was custom-built by Vin Diesel's father and holds a special value. If the car is so iconic for Vin Diesel that's good enough for us!

Porsche 917K - Le Mans

Le Mans was all about racing and is still considered cult movie and definitely a must see for all petrol heads. Put Steve McQueen at the wheel of a Porsche 917K and that's all you need. The movie is famous for its few dialogue lines but then the movie is about Le Mans so what you get is pure racing filmed beautifully.

Volkswagen Beetle - The Love Bug

The Love Bug from 1968 was the first movie to introduce Herbie the Beetle, others came later but let's not go there. What makes this movie so unique is that the car is the star of the movie, a loveable and strong minded car that joins a race. Fun fact: Disney chose the Beetle for the movie because it was the only one that made the crew reach out and pet it during the casting.

Pontiac Trans Am - Knight Rider

His official name was Knight Industries Two Thousand but you might know him as KITT. One of the most popular cars on the screen, KITT gave life to a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am at the service of David Hasselhoff. It made every 80's teenager salivate, a talking car that could actually be a friend. And it was also so comfortable too, just call him and there he comes!

Ford Falcon XB - Mad Max

The movie Mad Max from 1976 introduced the world two great australian stars, the Ford Falcon XB and Mel Gibson (yes, Mel Gibson was once cool). In a postapocalyptic world that runs out of fuel Gibson is a police officer looking for revenge and he does that behind the wheel of the amazing black Pursuit Special, a limited version of the Falcon XB.

Austin Mini - The Italian Job

The movie The Italian Job from 1969 made the world fall in love with the original Issigonis Mini. The movie is all about the Minis and the endless possibilities that they offer such as crossing sewers, tops of buildings, you name it! Fun fact: The movie crew created unauthorised traffic jams in Turin for the sake of showing the city's crowded streets. We say 'great idea' to that!

DeLorean - Back to the Future

Although Back to the Future is not a movie about a car we can safely say the the DeLorean DMC-12 is one of its stars. We can hardly say that the DeLorean is a good looking car but this movie definitely made it one of the coolest ones around.

Ford Mustang - Gone in 60 seconds

This Ford Mustang GT500 has to be one the most iconic cars to be featured in a movie. Known as "Eleanor", it is the star of a car chase that's like candy to a child's eyes. However the movie pays homage to a seriously hot set of cars, only 50 of the coolest cars you can think of. But it was Eleanor that became the sweetheart of cars fans.

Aston Martin DB5 - Goldfinger

The James Bond series is intimately connected with Aston Martin, especially the DB5. The british car is by now an icon and a symbol of the british gentleman and secret agent. Originally featured in the 1964 movie Goldfinger, the car also made appearances in Thunderball, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies and Casino Royale. The best part about the DB5? Q's amazing gadgets.

Ford Mustang 390 GT - Bullitt

Steve McQueen really made a name for himself as a car lover after starring in Le Mans (1971) and Bullitt (1968). What probably made this movie and the Ford Mustang Fastback such icons was what is still considered to be the best car chase ever in movie history. Oh and the sound of that V8 of course, let's not forget about that!
