I don't know where you live, but in the US buying a VW still seems very hit or miss in terms of reliability. Although VW not as bad as Mitsubishi. The worry with buying a Mitsubishi is if the company will even exist in the US in five years. It seems like a great car, though. The STI would seem like the winner, but it has just awful fuel mileage, which is going to add up quickly with premium fuel. If it were me, I would do one of two things. Either go buy a Focus ST for less money than all three but better mileage and a more modern chassis. Or wait 9 months and buy a new WRX or STI when they come out. I don't know for sure, but I am predicting that the next WRX is going to be a killer with much better fuel economy than the current model and the same or more power. I'm basing that on the leaps in efficiency that Subaru has gotten from their latest engines in the Legacy/Outback and especially in the Impreza. The new Impreza gets 36mpg on regular fuel in an all-wheel drive car with ~170hp. My wife and I bought a new Outback last November and are getting 32/33mpg highway, and that car is massive. To summarize, test drive a Focus ST, if you have to have all-wheel drive, wait for the next WRX. Hope my opinion helps.
