The seventh generation Malibu was designed by Bryan Nesbitt and introduced in 2008. It is based on a modified long-wheelbase Epsilon platform.
The latest generation is offered with a variety of engine and transmission choices. For 2009 the six-speed transmission mated to the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine or the 217 horsepower 3.5L V6 mated to the 4-speed automatic were made available on the 1LT. The 6-speed is standard on 2LT models. LS models were equipped with the 4-speed transmission only.
For 2011 the four speed automatic transmission was dropped from the Malibu powertrain lineup. All models are front-wheel drive sedans.
