Prince Motor Company started as a fighter planes builder under the name Tachikawa Aircraft Company. The first automobile, the Tama, an electric model, was produced in 1946. Tachikawa Aircraft Company changed to Prince Motor Company in 1952 in honor of Prince Akihito's investiture as Crown Prince. In 1954 they adopted the name Fuji Precision Industries and in 1961 they changed the name back to Prince Motor Company. Prince cars were quite successful as superior quality automobiles but the make was discontinued after the merger of Prince Motor Company with Nissan in 1966.
