Volkswagen unveiled at the 2015 Detroit Motor Show (NAIAS) the Cross Coupe GTE concept. This vehicle is a variant of the five-seat CrossBlue Coupe and received a number of changes in terms of design and engine. The Cross Coupe GTE will lead to a new model that should reach the market by the end of 2017.
The new model that will emerge from this new concept which is intended as a cheaper alternative to the BMW X6 and will be part of the offensive that Volkswagen is preparing for the North American market supported by a renewed range of SUVs. For this reason, the head of design of Cross Coupe GTE, Klaus Bischoff says that the concept has several design elements that will be part of the looks of the new SUV range.
Design
In terms of design of the new forward Cross Coupe GTE is dominated by horizontal elements, beginning with the grid across the width of the vehicle LED lamps are small. In GTE side has a greater overhang in relation to the region of the wheels beyond a belt line crossing the doors. At the rear of the vehicle is dominated by the tailgate and the large glass inclined at a large enough spoiler on top.
In comparison with the newly updated TOOLTIP Touareg, the GTE Cross Coupe is 52mm longer, wider and taller 90mm 26mm, to 4847mm long, 2030mm wide and 1736mm high.
Inside the Volkswagen Cross Coupe granted the GTE a cabin with seating for five adults with a contemporary style that has the updated version of unadorned dashboard presented with CrossBlue Coupe one of the highlights.
Hybrid powertrain
In addition of unveiling its new SUV design line of Volkswagen, the Cross Coupe GTE also serves to introduce the new plug-in hybrid powertrain of the German brand to be introduced in the medium and large models in the coming years.
The new powertrain combines a 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine and two electric motors, one on the front and one on the rear. The three engines produce a total combined output of 360hp. Power is transmitted through a dual-clutch six-speed gearbox that has the ability to offer front, rear and all-wheel drive.
According to Volkswagen this system allows the Cross Coupe GTE will reach 100km/h in 6 seconds and a maximum speed of 209km/h. In electric mode the vehicle has a range of 32km.
